Your Guide to Pleated Air Filters
Selecting the right filter for your applications can be a complex process. Oftentimes, people will try looking for filters that have a higher MERV rating as it should follow hat this provides cleaner air. However, this may not be the best option for flat panel filters in homes or office buildings, as higher MERV ratings can result in restricted airflow and higher energy consumption. Typically, the best advice is to opt for a pleated air filter instead, which has the ability to provide better filtration without compromising airflow.
First, it is important to understand what a pleated air filter is.
As their name suggests, pleated air filters consist of pleats, or folds, which helps to increase the surface area of the filter without having negative effects on airflow. This gives them the ability to trap more particles while still using a relatively low amount of energy.
Here are all the benefits of pleated air filters:
1. More particle control: Regular filters have less particle control because of their smaller surface areas. Furthermore, pleated air filters have more versatility, thanks to MERV ratings that go all the way up to 12. Regular filters, on the other hand, typically only go up to 8.
2. Better airflow: Even with higher MERV ratings, pleated filters are still able to maintain good airflow for indoors. As such, they are more energy-efficient and provide for a better, more comfortable indoor environment.
3. Easy to install and use: One of the challenges of installing new filters is the prospect of having to make alterations to existing ductwork. The design of pleated filters make them easy to install and maintain, thus making them suitable for use in households or commercial buildings.
4. Durability: As mentioned before, pleated filters are much easier to maintain. On top of that, they also do not need to be maintained as often as regular filters because they can last longer with their larger surface areas. How often you change your filter will still depend on how clean your surrounding air is, so make sure to keep an eye on your filter regardless of what type it is.
