When To Replace Welding Filters?

July 13, 2021

The key purpose of utilizing a welding filter is to capture and remove air contaminants from the work environment. This type of filter is usually made from miniscule fibers that are woven in sheets and are usually pleated. The pleated design is meant to increase the capture and filtration capabilities of the filter element.

Since welding filters come in various types, it helps to know the role of each one in order to better understand the ins and outs of your filtration system.

Pre-filter: this filter element is designed to trap bigger air particles before they enter the main filtration area of your system. This welding filter is often made from metal mesh to serve as a spark arrestor.

Main filter: this major filtration element is intended to remove most of the air contaminants from the welding process, especially the dangerous weld fumes. It is also commonly utilized for filtration purposes during the grinding process.

Post filter: this final filter is meant to remove any remaining particles that are very tiny, usually 0.1 micron in size. It corresponds to the HEPA filter used in vacuum cleaners that has very high efficiency in capturing even the tiniest air contaminants.

One of the biggest questions when it comes to welding filters is knowing when to replace the filter in your welding fume extraction system. Over time, the welding filter can be clogged or saturated with particles captured from the air. It is during this time that the element has to be changed or replaced. There are a number of signs to help you figure out when it’s time for a filter replacement. It can be that airflow becomes restricted or that air quality deteriorates, indicating that your filtration system is not up to par anymore.

When you notice these signs, it is important to get your filters replaced as soon as possible. If you are unsure of whether to replace your filters, you can speak to experts such as those at Dynamic Filtration. Contact us today for more information on our filtration products.
