What Is MERV Rating And How Does It Affect Air Quality?

September 27, 2022

When it comes to air filters, there are a plethora of filter elements to choose from. Right from fiberglass to panel and pleated filters, all are used in different situations effectively. Therefore, how can one select the right filter for their application on the basis of filtration quality? To solve this problem, the MERV rating was devised.

What Is MERV Rating?

The MERV rating is a scale that is used to rate the effectiveness of an air filter. The scale ranges from 1 to 16, with 1 being the least effective and 16 being the most effective. Thus, filters with a higher MERV rating are able to remove more airborne particles, such as dust, pollen, and mold spores, from the air.

MERV Rating Categories

MERV 8: This category captures most airborne particles larger than 3 microns, including dust, pollen, and mold spores.

MERV 11: In addition to the contaminants captured by MERV 8 filters, MERV 11 filters also capture particles between 1 and 3 microns in size, such as bacteria and viruses.

MERV 13: The highest efficiency rating, MERV 13 filters are able to capture even the smallest particles, down to 0.3 microns in size. This includes smoke, soot, and other dangerous airborne contaminants.

Importance Of MERV Rating

MERV rating is an important factor to consider when it comes to air quality. While most people think that all air filters are created equal, this simply isn't the case. The MERV rating system ensures that there is a way to measure and compare the performance of different air filters. This is important because it allows you to choose the right air filter for your specific needs.

For example, if you suffer from allergies, you'll want to choose an air filter with a high MERV rating in order to remove as many allergens from the air as possible. On the other hand, if you're simply trying to reduce dust in your home, a lower MERV rating may suffice.
