Two Major Types of Air Compressor Filter

September 13, 2022

There are a variety of filter elements in the market today, used for a variety of purposes. Among the various filters, those used in air compressors play a pivotal role in many sectors. These devices are used in a variety of settings, ranging from industries to home garages. In order for an air compressor to function properly, it must have a filter. The purpose of the air compressor filter is to remove contaminants from the air before it enters the compressor. This ensures that the air compressor does not become damaged and the air being compressed is clean. The two fundamental types of compressor filters are examined below.

Varieties of Air Filters

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters are typically used on smaller compressors. They work by trapping contaminants in their pores and allowing only clean air to pass through. Cartridge filters are made of pleated paper or fabric that is encased in a housing. The pleats increase the surface area of the filter, allowing more contaminants to be trapped.

Inline Filters

Inline filters are made of a series of metal screens that are arranged in a line. These screens trap contaminants as the air passes through them. Inline filters are typically used on larger compressors.

The difference in applications on the basis of compressor size is necessary as an air compressor equipped with the proper type of filter will provide optimal results. For example, an air compressor used in an industrial setting will usually require a large filter, that is an inline filter. Similarly, an air compressor used in a home garage is smaller, hence a cartridge filter may suffice.
