Comparing Low And High Efficiency Pleated Air Filters
Pleated air filters are known for their unique design. These industrial filters feature numerous pleats that help catch the maximum number of particles due to the increased surface area. Pleated air filters can be classified as low and high-efficiency air filters. Their main differences will be addressed in this blog.
Low Versus High Efficiency Pleated Air Filters
Particle Size
The major difference between the two pleated air filters lies in the particle size. Low-efficiency pleated air filters capture large particles - namely dust, pollen, pet dander, lint and so on. Their high-efficiency counterparts, on the other hand, are designed to handle even the smallest of contaminants such as bacteria, smoke particles and more.
MERV Rating
MERV rating measures how well an industrial filter can capture particles and is usually denoted by numbers 1 to 20, with 1 being the lowest rate of filtration and 20 being the highest. In this context, low-efficiency pleated air filters have a typical MERV rating of 5-8 at most, whereas high-efficiency filters have a MERV rating starting from 11 and can go all the way up to 20.
Durability
Lastly, there is the question of longevity and durability. On average, a low-efficiency pleated air filter can last around 3 months or so. High-efficiency pleated filters, on the other hand, have a lifespan of 1 to 2 months. This means that the low-efficiency filter works longer than the high-efficiency filter. The main reason behind this discrepancy is the intensity of use. Generally, high-efficiency filters are used in more intense environments and also capture more particles. This requires a more regular maintenance schedule and more frequent replacement for this type of industrial filter.
