2 Misconceptions About Pleated Air Filters And HVAC Systems

March 16, 2022

Pleated air filters are an integral part of a variety of filtration systems. Known for their large surface area, these filters can expertly capture a large concentration of contaminants, making them an important part of many high-quality HVAC systems as well. However, there are a couple of misconceptions regarding these filters that are still prevalent in the industry. It’s time to address and debunk them so that people can make smarter choices when it comes to their filtration system.

2 Major Misconceptions About Pleated Air Filters

Pleated Filters Will Damage The Fan Motor

Due to the large surface area of these filters, there’s a common misconception that they will not only trap contaminants but also reduce the airflow. Consequently, the fan motor of an HVAC system will have to work faster to compensate for reduced airflow, eventually leading to its breakdown. This is an absolute misconception because the functioning of the fan motor has nothing to do with airflow unless an ECM motor is used.

This means that at worst, the reduced airflow will force the motor to work for a longer period of time, which may or may not be detrimental in the long run.

Pleated Filters Will Potentially Damage Your HVAC System

One thing is true with respect to pleated air filters, they do account for a greater pressure drop in the system when compared to say, a fibreglass filter. On paper, this can reduce the lifespan of the HVAC system. However, with the latest innovations in pleated filters, this reduction is more or less negligible, when other factors are excluded.

That being said, when contaminants are taken into account, it turns out that using a pleated filter is actually more beneficial. Since fibreglass filters barely remove any contaminants, the pollutants have a greater tendency to enter the system, which can damage the working components much sooner than a drop in air pressure.

Hence, it’s a misconception that pleated air filters are detrimental to an HVAC system.
